JEWELLERY

Mrs. Hurst, principally occupied in playing with her bracelets and rings.

Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen18

Jewelled flowers and feathers dominated the first half of the century, although miniatures were also worn. After 1758 and the appearance of Halley’s Comet, stylized comets became quite a fad, worn on a bodice, sleeves or in the hair. Brooches worn on the bodice could be large, covering the whole stomacher. Three matching brooches in descending size order were also popular and worn on stomachers. Brooches were often used to pin up the skirts of long court dresses, and this is a pretty good solution to handling trains or long skirts on dresses if you plan to dance. Brooches can also be worn as hair ornaments.
